It’s Getting Harder To Watch Movies (CODEX)
by: Jeff Slokum
Afterlong, exhausting day you came home, had your dinner and then sat in front ofTV looking fornice relaxing movie. Nothing! Then suddenly you remembered that you boughtCD ofnew, Oscar-winning movie “Million Dollar Baby”. You took out your laptop, insertedfirst CD and hit “play”. To your surprise, only thing you could see wasgreen screen. You took outCD, cursing atmedia market that gave you“broken” CD forfifth time. Triedsecond CD; againfrustrating green screen. First thing inmorning, you took your “broken” movies and went toshop. Having yelled atowner ofshop for five minutes, you suddenly noticedcynical smile onguy’s face. Havingopportunity to talk, shop keeper said “CODEX”.

All you needed werecodecs for these movies. They were not broken; they were just coded in“foreign” language to your media player. The codecs weredictionary that your laptop had to use to translateabsurd computer language tonice scenes ofmovies.

Every video, audio, picture or even word document files are coded indifferent way. Incase of big data entries like movies, computer has to use different algorithms to compressdata so thatsize does not exceedstandard limits. We see this compression in PDF files (Acrobat Reader), in MPthree files (WinAMP), in MPEG files (movies), in each and every data storage file that you can imagine. Whilecompression is being done, programs use some kind ofdictionary. Without these “dictionaries” (codecs incase of video and audio files)code would seem as meaningless toplayer orviewer as it is to you. So you have to install certain codecs to be able to use certain files.

Some codecs replacerepetitive symbols overfile, ome codecs changesaspect ratio ofmovie; some of them decreasequality ofpicture and yet, all of them turn gigabytes of data into fair size that can fit intoCD orDVD.

Asuser demands increases, codecs are multiplying inlogarithmic scale. There are several codecs that are musts for movie fans, however. You should install most of these if you don’t want to be disappointed.

one. MPEGfour - It isdefault codec which is already included in WMP.
two. DIVX - A series of sound and display codex which come with shareware DIVX player.
three. XVID - Relatively new, one ofmost used video codecs.
four. ACthree - Most common sound codec.
five. Intel Indeo - Rather useful series of codec whichnew version pops out everyday.

Overallway movies are encoded is changing day by day. Everyday we seenew aspect ratio. Everyday we encounternew codec. To many, it would seem that it is getting harder and hard to watch movies. The least you can do is to downloadcodec viewer program which would help you on your quest forpleasant evening.
